Porridge has already become a real breakfast classic for many people. And rightly so, because porridge not only tastes good, but is also extremely healthy and versatile.
However, many people forget one thing when they think of porridge: the spices. In this article, we will tell you which spices you should definitely try and what they can offer in addition to their taste.
Which spices are suitable for my porridge
The spices that go with porridge vary just as much as the ways in which porridge can be prepared. While vanilla, cocoa or cinnamon go particularly well with sweet porridges, more exotic spices such as curry, cardamom or even chilli go well with savoury porridge.

There is no right or wrong – the important thing is that it tastes good. Nevertheless, we would like to give you a few tips on how to choose the right spices for your porridge.
Savoury porridges – these spices are a must
It is difficult to give a general spice recommendation for savoury porridge. The only spice that is actually always suitable is a pinch of salt. This serves as a flavour enhancer and thus helps other flavours to come out stronger.
If, for example, you would like to try a warming porridge for the winter, we would like to recommend our pumpkin spice porridge. It consists of our Verival Classic porridge mix, vegetable drink, Hokkaido pumpkin, apple and spices. Ground cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg and cloves are particularly suitable for this.
But cinnamon also goes extremely well with carrots and oats, as is the case with our Carrot Cake Porridge.
Even cardamom, aniseed and chilli are suitable for savoury porridge. To make it, mix 50 grams of oats with a little water or milk and add a pinch of salt and the three exotic spices.
If you're a curry lover, for example, you can use the basic porridge recipe and simply add curry powder, turmeric, fennel or chilli. This way, your porridge will be a tasty lunch.
These spices go well with sweet porridge creations
If you like to combine your morning oatmeal with fresh berries, cocoa powder and vanilla go particularly well. Fresh raspberries or strawberries with a chocolaty porridge and a light vanilla flavour will pamper your taste buds like no other breakfast.
But cinnamon often goes very well with it, too, for example with apple or pear. Turmeric, cardamom and nutmeg also go surprisingly well – for example with a rice-based porridge with orange and coconut.
And of course, a pinch of salt is always a must.
But in addition to the flavourful benefits, there is another reason to use a variety of spices. That's because they are extremely healthy.
Spices are so healthy
For example, even small amounts of cinnamon can regulate blood sugar levels and thus even indirectly help you lose weight. But cinnamon is also suitable for people with type 2 diabetes and people with cardiovascular diseases because of its properties. In addition to its positive effects on blood sugar levels, it can also lower bad LDL cholesterol.
Cocoa is one of the healthiest spices of all. This popular spice has a vessel-protecting effect and can thus counteract high blood pressure and heart disease. It also keeps the mind sharp and strengthens the immune system. While it is said to have a mood-enhancing effect, it also helps to protect the body from oxidative stress.
Turmeric, on the other hand, is hardly given any attention, especially at breakfast time. Nevertheless, it is worth using turmeric regularly. According to studies, it can even replace some medications in terms of its effects. Sufficient amounts of turmeric can lower cholesterol, act as a natural blood thinner, and inhibit inflammatory processes. Turmeric may even help with osteoarthritis and depression. Its list of positive properties seems almost endless.
Chilli doesn't seem to be able to do quite as much, but it still outperforms most other spices. Chilli is said to have a mood-boosting effect. But the hot spice is also said to be beneficial for heart health.
These spices help you lose weight
In addition to all the health benefits, some spices can even help you lose weight. For example, chilli suppresses hunger and boosts energy consumption .
