These ingredients are needed
The ingredients for overnight oats are very simple:
- Approx. 45 g oats
- Approx. 80 ml of milk or water
- Toppings of your choice
This is how you can whip up a delicious breakfast even when you're short on time. Oats made with milk are creamier than those made with water, and oats left to soak overnight with fruit become sweet. You could use chia or flax seeds as toppings, for example, as well as various berries or fruits. Overnight oats with yoghurt are even creamier and more delicious. You can use all kinds of yoghurt, such as natural yoghurt, Greek yoghurt or even coconut yoghurt. If oats aren't for you, you can also use spelt flakes.
Preparation: how to make your oats extra tasty
Preparation is just as simple as the list of ingredients itself. You don't need to be able to do much or put in a lot of effort to make perfect overnight oats.
For the quick version, first take a suitable container such as a bowl or a jar and fill it with all the ingredients you would like to have and stir them together. This is how oats, yoghurt and milk, as well as honey and a third of the berries or fruit, come together and soak overnight in the refrigerator. The total time required is a maximum of five minutes, making it the perfect breakfast for those who are grumpy in the morning.
For the more elaborate version with different layers, you first have to mix the yoghurt with milk and possibly honey. Now divide the mixture into two bowls. Add a third of the berries to one of the bowls. The rest of the berries should be kept fresh so that you can use them as a topping later!
Add oats to both bowls, mix one last time and then put them straight in the fridge. The next morning, the oats should still have some structure. Now you can arrange the individual layers in a glass in turn and finally decorate everything with nuts, berries and seeds.

How to store overnight oats with yoghurt
Generally speaking, overnight oats will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. However, this time will be shorter or longer depending on the ingredients you use to prepare your oats. You should always store overnight oats in the fridge to prevent the yoghurt and milk from going sour. If you have added fresh fruit to the oats, they will keep for a maximum of 2 days.
You can also freeze overnight oats. They will then keep for about 3 months. At Verival, we recommend that you only freeze the oats without the toppings and spices, i.e. just the basic recipe, because otherwise the fruit, nuts and other toppings will lose their flavour.
This is how you can reduce the calories in overnight oats
If you would like to discover a low-calorie form of overnight oats for yourself, that's not a mistake either. For example, you can make your oats with water or low-fat quark instead of yoghurt or milk. Soy milk or almond milk can also be used as a milk substitute!
The basic recipe remains the same and you only need to swap a few ingredients to create a low-calorie version of overnight oats.
