How are oats produced?
All the natural substances contained in the oat grain should be preserved as far as possible. Controlled organic cultivation ensures that the oats retain their nutrients. During the conventional milling process, important ingredients are usually lost. In the production of oat flakes, the whole grain is processed. The different types of flakes contain all the relevant parts of the grain.
The raw oats are then processed into delicious muesli or porridge mixes. Oats are harvested in late summer. State-of-the-art machines are needed for this. The oat grain is separated extremely carefully from the stalk. The oats are then delivered to the oat mill. Quality control is of the utmost importance here. The grain is checked for appearance and smell using modern technology.
The production of oats step by step
Here we show you again how the valuable grain for your porridge is obtained.
Cleaning
First of all, the grain has to be cleaned and sieved. This is how it is freed from weed seeds, straw and any other foreign grains. Any metallic objects can be sorted out with magnets. Small stones can also be easily separated from the oats.
During the harvesting process, the oat grains are sorted according to length. After that, the oat grains have to sweat thoroughly. The pipes are very hot. The high temperatures increase the oats' durability and improve their flavour. This process is called kilning.
Hulling
Now the husks, the outer shells of the oat grains, are removed. The oats are placed on a rotating robot and hurled against the baffle ring. The impact ensures that the husks separate from the grains. The blower then sucks up the husks.
Rolling
The flakes can now be processed further. The oat grains are sorted by size and rolled into flakes. The grains are then heated with steam, which makes the flakes more elastic. The large flakes are obtained from the grain. Other flakes are processed into oat groats and small flakes.
In which foods and products is oat used?
As already mentioned, different types of flakes are obtained during production. Cereal flakes are usually available on their own, in the form of muesli or porridge. Muesli bars also often contain a high proportion of oat flakes. Nowadays, oat flour, desserts such as oat biscuits, oat milk and oat bread are also available.
Oat flakes
Porridge has been a popular breakfast in England for a long time. Now, many countries around the world have discovered this healthy breakfast. To make porridge, you mix the oats with milk or water.
As early as the 18th century, farmers boiled oats with water or milk to make a tasty dish. Porridge first appeared in English cookbooks. Here, the oat flakes were often enriched with butter, pepper, wine or sherry.
Oatmeal: a filling hot breakfast
Oatmeal is never fattening. The porridge provides you with important complex carbohydrates and contains plenty of protein. Porridge also contains a high amount of fibre, which keeps you full for a long time.
Fibre is a long-chain carbohydrate that only causes blood sugar levels to rise slowly. This helps to avoid food cravings. Due to its high protein content, porridge is also the ideal sports nutrition food. Porridge is by no means just a healthy breakfast. You can also enjoy it as a snack between meals.

Muesli is a complete meal and provides your body with important nutrients, minerals and lots of fibre. This gives you plenty of energy. Oats are very digestible, contain valuable protein, vegetable fats and plenty of vitamins such as vitamin E, B vitamins and minerals such as iron, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc.
Why are oats so healthy?
There are many reasons why oats are so healthy. In addition to boosting brain power, the numerous dietary fibres are the reason for the domestic superfood.
High amount of dietary fibres
Oat flakes keep you full for a long time. This is due to the high amount of the soluble fibre beta-glucan. Oat beta-glucan lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels and can prevent cardiovascular diseases 1. In addition, oats are good for digestion. The fibre slows down the emptying of the stomach.
Oats can help you lose weight. You stay full longer and consume fewer calories. The German Nutrition Society recommends eating 30 grams of cereal flakes daily. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has published a study on the topic – Dietary Fibre and Satiety: The Effects of Oats on satiety. 2 From this, it can be concluded that oat beta glucan can have positive effects on satiety. Further studies are to follow.
Positive influence on cholesterol
Heart disease is usually caused by high cholesterol levels. The dietary fibre beta-glucan can lower cholesterol levels. To achieve this, about 80 grams of oats must be consumed daily. Beta-glucan also slows the absorption of fat and cholesterol.
Help with type 2 diabetes
Oats are also highly recommended for type 2 diabetes. Oats help to maintain a constant blood sugar level. They have a positive effect on insulin sensitivity. Your stomach empties more slowly and your blood absorbs less glucose.
Help with constipation
If you suffer from stomach pain, you should try oat soup. This is gentle on your stomach and stimulates digestion. While laxatives can lead to weight loss, especially in older people, oats are a healthy alternative.
The outer hull of oats is particularly effective for treating constipation. Oat bran contains the outer hull in concentrated form. Eating a soup or dessert with oats every day can help to regulate digestion.
Oats are full of antioxidants
The oat grain contains many antioxidants and polyphenols. These include avenanthramides, for example. The antioxidants lower blood pressure. They can also reduce inflammation and itching. Antioxidants protect your body from free radicals and thus from premature aging.
